My generator won’t start. How do I fix it?

There are a few reasons that could lead to your generator failing to start. Follow these step-by-step instructions to get your generator working. If you received a ‘Failed to switch to generator’ notification follow the same procedure to resolve the issue.

STEP 1, Make sure your phone or computer is connected to the internet

Check that you have an internet connection. Once you verify that your device is online, try to start your generator. If the generator doesn’t come on try the next step.

STEP 2, Make sure SHYFT STS is in Smart Position - 3

If it’s already in smart position, press the silver 'Gen' button on your STS to restart your generator. If the generator doesn’t start, move to the next step.

STEP 3, Confirm that your generator is in Automatic mode

Check that the generator is in automatic mode, press the silver 'Gen' button on your STS to restart your generator. If the generator doesn’t start, go to Step 4.

STEP 4, Check for alarms on your generator

Reach out to your generator maintenance provider or energy service provider if your generator has an alarm. SHYFT may also have sent you a notification that looks like this confirming a fault on your generator. Depending on the alarm present, you may be able to clear the alarm from your generator controller and then start the generator from SHYFT Connect, however SHYFT always advises that following an active alarm incident a generator should be serviced to ensure that it can continue to reliably provide power when required.

If your generator has no alarms then go to step 5.

STEP 5, Do a visual check of the cable between SHYFT STS and your generator

Check the area between your SHYFT STS and generator. If you observe anything unusual such as a cable cut between SHYFT STS and the generator, kindly reach out to your SHYFT Support.
