Investigatory Steps for Assessing Meter Consumption Concerns

When concerns arise regarding the consumption readings of a meter, it is crucial to perform a thorough investigation to ensure accuracy and identify any potential issues. This guide outlines the steps your technicians should take to verify the integrity of the meter readings and troubleshoot any anomalies. Following these procedures will help you pinpoint the source of any irregularities and take appropriate corrective action.

STEPS RESULTS (Expected Outcome) EXPLANATION NEXT STEPS
Request permission and turn off the main breaker of the resident's consumer unit (DB) for at least 30 mins.

Note: If the meter has already been disconnected via auto-disconnect put the meter on manager override and reconnect the meter, so there is current flow through the meter.
On the power manager app, the energy reading is expected to be zero for the period the breaker was off. (see No electricity can pass through the consumer unit; therefore, the meter should not record any energy consumption.

If any reading is observed, your electrician should immediately check the following:

  • Check for an illegal cable connection between the meter and the resident's consumer unit (DB).
  • Check if there is a bridge in the live cable to neutral.
  • Check for earth current leakage.
